Common Fault Codes & Symptoms
A faulty Gen 5 Haldex pump can cause rear AWD loss, AWD disabled messages, or pressure-related DEM faults. Common symptoms and diagnostic codes include:
-
P1889-71Oil pressure pump performance fault / possible internal leak or pump damage -
P1889-18Air entered the AWD clutch package during filling / bleeding issue -
P1889-14Oil pressure pump performance – circuit short to ground or open circuit -
DEM-0006Often pump-related AWD pressure / pump fault -
DEM-0007Often pressure sensor related, but may also be caused by pump issues - Rear-wheel slippage / front wheels spinning without rear engagement
- AWD failure message on dashboard
- ESP / traction warning lights
- AWD system disabled or intermittent AWD operation
Installation & Service Notes
Recommended Steps
- Verify the exact OEM number on the original Haldex pump
- Remove the pump and inspect the strainer / gauze screen
- Clean the strainer with a lint-free cloth only
- Do not use cleaning liquids inside the pump sump or coupling housing
- Fill the coupling with fresh Haldex oil to the correct level
- Perform the correct calibration procedure after service
- Clear AWD / DEM fault codes after installation
Why Haldex Pumps Fail
1. Clogged Strainer / Gauze Screen
When the pump screen becomes blocked by contamination, the pump has to work harder to build pressure and can eventually burn out.
2. Old or Contaminated Oil
Neglected Haldex oil increases internal resistance and accelerates wear of the pump motor and pressure circuit.
3. Internal Pump Wear
Worn internal components, leaks, or electrical faults can cause pressure loss and AWD performance problems.
4. Incorrect Filling or Missing Calibration
Air in the coupling or missing calibration after service can trigger Gen 5 pressure faults and unstable AWD operation.
